Public Relations Techniques

Greater Collegedale School System

This semester (Winter 2018) I took Public Relations Techniques with Professor Natalia Lopez-Thismon. For this class I had to do several projects for a community partner of my choosing. I decided to work with the Greater Collegedale School System and made various pieces for them including an advertisement, a press release, a brochure and a media kit. This class has really pushed my understanding of PR.

Digital Media Kit

  • One of the biggest projects that I worked on all semester was my media kit. Personally, when I learned about these, I was so glad that they exist.

Press Release

  • To begin with, the first project that I worked on for this class was the required press release.

  • I sat down with Ms. Howell to see what events the school system had coming up that would be of note for media coverage and we decided that it would be beneficial for me to write about Collegedale Academy’s upcoming Academy Days during which the school invites prospective students to take a trial run to see if they would be a good fit for the campus.

  • Ms. Howell provided me with the school’s press release template for my article and I got to work.

  • I worked on an advertisement for the school.

  • I wanted to make something that would fit nicely in multiple places including a Facebook ad, a magazine and a newspaper and my design reflects my different medias. I choose to do a piece that would appeal to people’s hearts, or the pathos.

  • The ad features a little girl holding up a craft that she has made and it talks about how school is more than just math equations, because I want people from the outside to see that the school is well rounded and is interested in supporting all the different sides of students.

Brochure

  • Another assignment that I chose for the GCSS was the brochure.

  • The last brochure that they had had made was most likely around five years old and was in need of an update. The brochure was very text heavy and was a lot to read.

  • So, I decided to redesign it for a more modern and updated look that they may be able to pull ideas from, if not use itself. Instead of a traditional fold, I decided to do an accordion fold for the brochure to give it some more space and a cool display look for different events that they might have.

  • One can see the entire brochure on one side with this design technique.

Digital Marketing

  • For this project I had to create a three-piece emails series in addition to five social media posts about the organization on a platform of my choice. I chose to do my emails for prospective parents and so I chose to put my social media posts on Facebook because it best fits the demographics that I was looking for.

  • My blogs and posts invite the prospective parents to visit, gives them information about costs, and gives them links to relevant information.

  • Scroll through to see all pieces of this campaign.

  • I love the idea of planning an event, making promotional materials and then having people come and experience all of your hard work. For this project I used the Academy Days event again and I created a few pieces to go along with it.
